Julia Ehret Granton

I am the 7th child of 8. 7 is my lucky number. My birth name is Julia Harriet Ehret. Namesake is my father's mother, Harriet Adolf Ehret, and my parents just like the name Julia.

KISS = keep it simple stupid. As you can see, that is a challenge. But I work on it.

My interests include art and music and I like to volunteer in many ways in order to learn from people. I desire two things that may never achieve. 1) Be a full time art student and 2) Start a local chapter of a Catholic Worker's Hospitality House. I am inspired by the life of Dorothy Day and also Mother Theresa. My favorite artist is Rene Magritte.

I am a dreamer. One of my greatest thrills, is seeing my dreams come true. So I work hard to encourage that to happen. I believe that my greatest strength is hope. But sometimes that hope makes me work harder than I should. It's hard for me to spot what is truly a lost cause.

I choose to not become addicted to anything. I like feeling like I can have whatever I want, whenever I want. When it becomes a need, it's no longer special. I stay away from anything illegal because 1) I don't need to encourage trouble in my life and 2) I am my kids role model. But I do support the legalization of marijuana if it's treated like alcohol.

I attend church on Sundays, and have done so (on and off) since childhood. I am Catholic by tradition. The reason I don't change is that every Catholic mass is the same. I like to sing the songs and to recite the profession of faith. I like to hear the priest's homily after the gospel reading. It's a comfort to know what to expect in the midst of life's twists and turns.

I have created this series of blogs, to start recording facts and memories about each of my siblings and each of my parents. It is my hope to pass down to future generations, a biography for each of us 8 Ehret kids, and our mom and dad. We've had our ups and downs, as have all families, and tragedy has struck us hard. But we've learned, we've grown, forgiven and moved on. I like to believe that we carry in our hearts love and honor for each other, no matter where we are. Ehret means Honor in German and I honor my life and my family.

I like Julia and the name too. I've always wanted to name a child Harriet but the spouse never agreed.
Harriet Beecher Stowe is a favorite childhood hero to me. She is remembered chiefly for her antislavery novel, Uncle Tom's Cabin and of famous characters, Uncle Tom, Little Eva, Topsy, and Simon Legree.

So, I was interrupted without my complete thought. The book I most enjoyed was a biography, hence where hero came from. I'll have to find a good biography (and a good read)for Harriet.
