And Now We Are Six
On whims and dreams
my instincts drove me
the past 17 years
as the head of us three
The power of three
we held fierce to each other
safe in our circle
we understood one another
But the power of three
is now multiplied by two
and now we are six
since I've included you
You're an anchor for me
and I'm safe in your arms
I can't float too far
from where we all are
But the two who still cling
to the power of three
are frozen in time
with the memory of thee
Awaiting the thaw
we move forward in time
building our days
with talk and fine wine
A whole family
is a difficult tack
because two join in willingly
but two remain back
Unwilling to change
unwilling to grow
content in the memory
of all that they know
One strong whole family
is the quest we persist
while we patiently move on
towards the power of six.

Leaving home
My daughter left home last night
with a $20 bill and a 31 day bus pass
with a kiss on the cheek and a hug to keep her warm
her father drove her
away from the home she's always known
the prior 17 years of her life
away to her requested destination
a new life with her friends
the people who understand her
the people who lift her up
the people who replace us
I told her I love you
and she said I love you too mom
I love you unconditionally.
